Define purpose of your resume

It is highly important that you write a resume by keeping a vision in mind. Therefore, you must define the clear purpose or objective of writing your resume. Some people write their resume with a general approach which makes them look like desperate job hunters.

Mention your professional goals

It is important that you highlight your professional goals pr aspirations in the resume. This gives employers an idea of where you are going and what exactly you are looking for.

Define your qualities and strengths

Be proud of your achievements and make sure you highlight them in your resume. For example, if you led your school Cricket team in the past, then highlight it as it displays the traits of leadership qualities. Do not write generic strengths such as disciplined, creative, and problem solver.

Use right keywords

Using right keywords will make your resume more searchable on the job websites. Almost all the HR personnel use search queries based on some typical keywords directly relating to the profession. Therefore, it is important for job seekers to write resume and include keywords which are used frequently.

Use right job titles

Employers can reject your resume within 5 seconds based on the kind of titles you have used. Hence, write job titles which are short and yet descriptive. They shouldn’t be generalist without any definite scope. For Example-

Bad Title
- Researcher
Right Title- Manager-Business Research

Use bullet points

Do not write paragraphs as employers typically do not have time to read through long text. Therefore, write in bullet points to keep the information short and precise.

Use right font and size to communicate

Make sure that your font size is not too small. While should typically use fonts like Arial or Times, your font size should not be smaller than 11 or 12. Further, do not use capital letters inappropriately or excessively.

Highlight your achievements

Make sure that you highlight whatever achievements you have had during your jobs. Your achievements speak volumes of your ability to perform tasks.

Customize your resume

One mistake that job seekers often make is that they use a standard resume and send the same against all the job openings. It is important to shape your resume as per the requirements of the employer. This will surely enhance your chances to get a call.

Be Selective and Write information which is most relevant

Delete irrelevant information including work experience which is not indicative of your skills to perform tasks. Further, at times your educational qualifications would give you an edge over your work experiences. In such cases, place your education details before your work experiences.

Do not include fake Information

Do not include information which is non-existent. You must include all the genuine information in your resume. Do not fake your work experiences or qualification as interviewers would find out about them.

Do not exceed Page limit by 2

Keep your resume short and precise. Most employers do not have time to read long resumes exceeding 2 pages. Therefore, just include most relevant information.

Include action verbs

Make use of action verbs like managed, enforced, planned, and negotiated in your resume to make it more effective.

Avoid usage of slangs or jargons

BIG No to the usage of Jargons – They leave a bad impression and provides for a very unprofessional look of the resume.

No usage of pronouns

Your resume should not include pronouns such as “I” or “me.”
